After the tragic season finale, the cast of the Hallmark Channel period drama, Lori Loughlin, Erin Krakow, and Daniel Lissing sat down with executive producer Brian Bird for a Facebook Live aftershow. During the show, they cleared about the Lissing’s decision and shared about the emotionally devastating episode.

As the cast members of each shows are bind with contract and with that, Lissing was not an exception. Loughlin shared, “First and foremost, I want to say to all of our fans that three of us here are very good friends, and we all love each other and we support each other. But we are actors, and actors have contracts and sometimes contracts expire and you have a choice to make. You either renegotiate or you don’t, and Dan has chosen to move on, we respect that. No judgment, we love him, we wish him well, he’s still part of the Hallmark family.”

She went on to mention that to write off John Thornton from the show led them to the “tricky decision.” After all, Jack and Elizabeth’s wedding had been a major event episode earlier this season.

However, the crew even decided to “recast the role” but that wasn’t a good option as the chemistry the Jack and Elizabeth have, “the writer didn’t feel like that was possible.”

Loughlin continued, “We knew our time was limited with Dan and the actor wouldn’t be coming back. So if we sent him off to the Northern Territories, now we have Elizabeth sitting at home in Hope Valley just pining away and waiting? Not much story to tell,” 

After several ideas that strike the writers head, Loghlin said that they realized, “the only way he would leave her is in death.”

Without a doubt, it was really hard for the writers to go on with the decision to say goodbye to one of the fan-favorite characters. Also his strong fanbase made the writers even tougher to go on with the scenario. However, Loughlin emphasized, “But I want the fans to know that we, in making that decision, we really did take you into consideration.” 

That’s why the show gave the viewers what they actually wanted to see from the blossomed romance of Jack and Elizabeth. And that includes an engagement, a wedding and also “a baby on the way.” All of that before the end of Lissing’s time on the series.

Regarding the death of Jack, Lissing said, “Circumstances arose for me where I needed to leave When Calls the Heart for reasons that are very personal to me. I went to Hallmark and they were nothing but supportive of me. I went to the girls and they were nothing but supportive of me.”

Further, Erin shared about the departure of her onscreen love interest that it was “really sad.” As she began to tear up and said, “Dan, in many ways, has been my partner in crime for five years, and one of my greatest scene partners ever, and I’m just really gonna miss him.”

The season finale was something that was somehow unexpected for the Hearties to see their favorite cast getting written off. However, at the end of Sunday’s finale, it turns out that his memory will live on in Elizabeth, as she discovered that she is pregnant with her late husband’s child.
