Recent health condition of Sig Hansen
On the long-awaited season 15 premiere of Deadliest Catch, F/V Northwestern Captain Sig Hansen was mysteriously missing from the show’s beginning.
Sig Hansen Suffered Second Heart Attack
After arriving late and seeing everything managed, Hansen called a meeting to thank his crew members and tell them that he’d suffered a second heart attack. He said,
“Well, you guys did a good job so far. I mean, I’m sorry I wasn’t here. But the only reason I couldn’t get up here earlier was because I had another slight heart attack.”
Even though he described it as a “slight” heart attack, one of his arteries was completely blocked. He suffered his first heart attack in February 2016 while filming the show and suffered this second scare last October in Seattle.
The 52-year-old blames his health problems on an allergic reaction to antibiotics. He took in antibiotics after he had a sinus infection in Norway. When he was in the hospital to treat the infection, he was busted for smoking. Since then, he hasn’t touched the cigarettes.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, he described that his whole body, including his throat, was swelling up due to the antibiotics. His wife rushed him to the hospital, where he was given an EpiPen, after which he felt pain in his chest.

The aftermath of the Heart Attack
The news shook up his daughter Mandy. She said,
“The first heart attack should have been an eye-opener. I’m thankful that I’m here, get to spend some extra time with him. I wanna support him in any way possible. And hopefully, we’ll just make it through king crab and get home safe.”
Sig Hansen indicated that retirement is on his mind and has also expressed a need to get Mandy ready to helm his boat, the Northwestern. Hansen believes that Mandy and her husband, Clark Pederson, a deckhand in F/V Northwestern, can run the ship. He stated,
“I’m just grateful Mandy’s up here. Ya know, if she’s gonna overtake this one of these days, or if that’s the idea or the plan, we need to get moving on it. Bottom line, I just want to get out there and start fishing. Time is short.”
When asked if he is worried about going back out to sea, he said,
“I’m still afraid to go on the boat. I don’t like it anymore. I don’t even remember this king crab season. I’m still trying to get over this last winter. I can’t get it out of my mind. Its scary. It’s been rally hard. I don’t know how much more I’ve got left in me.”
Deadliest Catch airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Discovery.
