Sara Ramirez was born on 31st August 1975 in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico. She was born to a Mexican father and Mexican & Irish-American mother.
Sara became a resident of California after her mother, Luisa Vargas, moved to California when Sara was 8 years old. She attended San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and later graduated from Juilliard School.

Ramirez joined the cast of the popular medical drama, Grey's Anatomy, in 2006 as Dr. Callie Torres. She was promoted to regular cast for the show's third season. She left the series in 2016.
For her performance in the show, she was nominated for five ALMA Awards, one NAACP Award, and one People's Choice Award. Along with the cast, she won the Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at the 13th Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2007.
Ramirez also lent her voice for the musical episode, Song Beneath the Song, which aired in March 2011.
Sara began her showbiz career in 1988 in the Broadway musical, The Capeman, where she played the role of Wahzinak. She followed that with a small role in the popular movie You’ve Got Mail starring Tom Hanks.
