Richard Trethewey has been an integral cast member of the long-running home improvement show, This Old House since 1980.
The producer of the show, Russell Morash first called Richard’s father, Ron and uncle, John with an idea for the home improvement show in 1978.
Ron was the proprietor of Trethewey Bros. Inc., the family plumbing and heating business serving the Boston community since 1902.
Ron loved working on the show but was not comfortable with cameras, so he asked his 25 years old son, Richard to take over.
Since 1980, Richard has been overseeing all plumbing, heating and air conditioning renovations for each ‘This Old House’ project.
He has also appeared in ‘This Old House’ spin-off series, Ask This Old House and Inside This Old House.
Born and raised in Dedham, Massachusetts, he learned about heating and plumbing from his father during summers and school vacations.
Now, he is a licensed master and journeyman plumber in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
In 1990, he founded RST Inc., a manufacturer’s representative for several lines of plumbing and HVAC equipment.
He also serves on the editorial board of This Old House magazine, published by This Old House Ventures, Inc.
He has contributed to several books published by This Old House Books, including Complete Remodeling and The Homeowner's Manual.
Additionally, he also authored ‘This Old House Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning’ in 1994.
His sons, Evan Trethewey and Ross Trethewey are also involved in their father’s business and sometimes appear on ‘This Old House.’
