Sad news for Lethal Weapons fans! Damon Wayans used his popular catchphrase “I’m too old for this” while sharing his plan on leaving the show.
Is he leaving?
Damon appears as Roger Murtaugh in the Warner Bros. Television-produced buddy-cop comedy-drama series. He plans to leave in December after completing the production of initial 13-episode order by Fox for season 3. During an interview with Electronic Urban Report, he shared,
“I’m going to be quitting the show in December after we finish the initial 13. So I really don’t know what they’re planning, but that’s what I’m planning. I’m a 58-year-old diabetic, and I’m working 16-hour days.”
When asked if he's merely "over it," he quoted his character, Roger Murtaugh from Lethal Weapon film franchise: "I’m done. Like Murtaugh said, I’m too old for this.” While he is bind with a contract for more seasons, he assured that he’s not joking. He went on to explain that the rigorous schedule is not only deteriorating his health but also affecting his family life.
More recently, his mother and daughter underwent surgeries, but Damon wasn’t able to be with them. He explained, "It’s hard for me to play this loving, supportive father, husband, friend on TV and be the guy in life that is telling everybody, ‘I can’t; I have to work.' The 58-year-old also noted that he is giving the production team “enough time to find a replacement.” As for his post-Murtaugh plans, he shared that he will return to the stage and “try to find [his] smile again.” His announcement of departure came months after Clayne Crawford’s character, Martin Riggs, was killed off.
Damon and Clayne had a controversial relationship behind the scenes, which came to the public eye after an audio clip of their feud was released. Their feud was over the injury (was hit in the head by shrapnel) that Damon sustained while filming an episode which Clayne directed. Clayne was replaced by American Pie star, Seann William Scott, as a new character, Wesley Cole.
