Mehriban Aliyeva is the first Vice President of Azerbaijan. She is also the First Lady of Azerbaijan as she is married to President Ilham Aliyev. She assumed office on February 21, 2017.
Mehriban was born as Mehriban Pashayeva on August 26, 1964, in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR, Soviet Union, to a powerful Azerbaijani family. She is the granddaughter of famed Azerbaijani author Mir Jalal Pashayev and her uncle, Hafiz Pashayev, was the first Azerbaijani ambassador to the United States. She attended the Azerbaijan Medical University and the Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy and worked at the State Research Institute of Eye Diseases of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences from 1988 to 1992.
Recognized for her philanthropy, Mehriban was appointed as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 2004.
She married the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on December 22, 1983. She was 19 then and had just finished high school. She became the First Lady when her husband was appointed the President on October 31, 2003. They have three children together.
