Like his father, he is a jack-of-all-trades who follows his approach to a subsistence lifestyle that revolves around hunting and fishing than farming. Starting with a single cabin, he continues to grow his pastures, land and home. Living a hybrid lifestyle between a hunter and farmer, he successfully provides his family with food through the eight months-long, harsh winters.

The Kilcher family has featured in Discovery’s Alaska: The Last Frontier. The show started airing in 2011 and is currently running in its eighth season. They earn from $7k to $10k per episode of the show. Their income is also supplemented by the sales of vegetables from the Kilcher farm.
