Chris Cuomo Speaks on Brother Andrew Cuomo’s Sexual Harassment Scandal
Chris Cuomo is clearing the air as he discusses CNN’s coverage of the sexual assault allegations against his sibling, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. CNN’s correspondent began Monday’s episode of Cuomo Prime Time with comments on the accusations and the fact that he’s not going to cover the news because of the potential conflicts of interest.
Chris said,
Before we start tonight, let me say something that I’m sure is very obvious to you who watch my show — and thank you for that. You’re straight with me, I’ll be straight with you. Obviously, I’m aware of what’s going on with my brother. And obviously, I cannot cover it because he is my brother.
The journalist added, “Now, of course, CNN has to cover it. They have covered it extensively and they will continue to do so. I have always cared very deeply about these issues, and profoundly so. I just wanted to tell you that. There’s a lot of news going on that matters also, so let’s get after that.”
The comments arrive as the governor got accused by several women of unethical conduct at the workplace over the past week. Andrew made a statement that refuted the accusations over the weekend.
Sexual assault charges against the governor stem from another controversy surrounding COVID-19-related nursing home casualties being underreported and unreported—another news Chris was forbidden to cover when CNN restored its former rule that the reporter is not permitted to cover the politician.
Although Chris had his brother on the show earlier during the coronavirus pandemic, the company made it clear that it was an exemption to the norms surrounding conflict of interest.
“The early months of the pandemic crisis were an extraordinary time,” a CNN spokesperson stated to ET.
They thought that Chris talking to his brother about the problems faced by millions of American families was of tremendous human interest. As a result, they made an exception to the principle that they have had in place since 2013, which forbids Chris from questioning and covering up his brother, and that rule remains in place to this day.
