Steven Holcomb is considered to be one of the best bobsledders in the history of United States. He was three times Olympics gold medalist, including one at the Vancouver Games in 2010. Holcomb was supposed to participate in the ongoing PyeongChang Olympics, which likely would have been the final race of his career. Unfortunately, the bobsled champion was found dead on his bed nine months ago.

Steven Holcomb was reportedly found dead on May 6, 2017, on his bed at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York. He was 37. The initial autopsy report specified the fluid in his lungs was the primary factor for Holcomb’s death. However, the toxicology test results later indicated that the late Olympic champion had alcohol and prescribed sleeping pills in his system.

Holcomb’s blood-alcohol level was way over the intoxication level with the reading of 0.188. In addition to that, reports also indicated that he had consumed his sleeping pills, Lunesta, more than his usual dose. The combination of two proved to be deathly for the 37-year-old bobsledder.

Following the death, Holcomb’s family released a statement to USA Bobsled and Skeleton. The statement read, “We hold our memories of him close and are so proud of him, not only as an athlete but also as a person.”

Although the investigation of Essex County Coroner Francis Whitelaw was completed months ago, Whitelaw never released the final reports. He revealed that he was prohibited from issuing the statements. Holcomb’s family had threatened to sue Whitelaw if he failed to maintain privacy about the slider’s death.

Their attorney, E. Stewart Jones spoke in favor of the family stating that releasing the final report of Holcomb’s death without the permission of the family and court order would mean a violation of the state law. However, New York State Police has planned to release the report to the public but what the report will contain and when will it be released is still the matter of question.

Holcomb was undoubtedly one of the biggest stars in American bobsled team with ten world championship medals and 60 world cup medals over his neck. He was all set to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. His demise has also left the team hollow and suffering. However, the team is all set to compete in the Olympics with the memories of their legend at heart.
