Knight has had run-ins with the law several times before his 2015 arrest. He was arrested for the first time in 1987, when he assaulted his then girlfriend. On Halloween that year, he was arrested again for theft and attempted murder but got out on two years probation. In February 1997, he was sentenced to nine years in prison for violating the probation. He was released in 2001.

His next arrest came in 2008 when he was found beating his girlfriend Melissa Issac outside a Las Vegas strip club. A few months later, the charges were dropped. Most recently, in August 2017, Knight was charged for threatening to murder Straight Outta Compton director F. Gray Gray.
