Richard Benjamin Harrison is a businessman and reality TV personality, best known as the “Old Man” in the History’s reality series, ‘Pawn Stars.’

He and his son, Rick Harrison co-own the world famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, which is featured on the show.

Richard Benjamin Harrison, Jr. was born on March 4, 1941, in Danville, Virginia, U.S.

He was a year old when his family relocated to Lexington, North Carolina, where they

resided at 115 Peacock Avenue.

He attended Lexington High School but left during his junior year because his family couldn’t afford his studies.

To support his family’s economy, he drove a school bus at the age of 14. He would get five or six dollars a week for the job.

Richard was once arrested for stealing a car, and the judge asked him to choose between going to prison and joining the military. He chose the latter.

Around the same time, he met his future wife, JoAnne Rhue (a country judge, Joseph Rhue’s daughter) and fell in love with her.

They got married in 1960 and welcomed their first child Sherry. Sherry was born with Down syndrome.

Richard left the Navy in 1962 but re-enlisted 14 months later to obtain the health care benefits necessary for Sherry’s treatment, but she died at 6.

Ultimately, he served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, including his stints as a paymaster, and attaining the rank of Petty Officer, first class.

While he continued to serve in the Navy, his wife obtained her real estate license in 1970 and opened her office in 1973.

After retiring from the Navy, he worked part-time at his wife’s office until their business collapsed due to declining real estate sales in 1981.

In April, with just $5,000, he and his wife with their three sons, Joseph, Rick and Chris moved to Las Vegas.

Then, he and son, Rick opened Gold & Silver Coin Shop at 1501 Las Vegas Boulevard and obtained a license to trade second-hand goods in 1987.

In 1989, the father-son duo founded the world famous Gold and Silver Pawn Shop at 713 Las Vegas Boulevard South.

Since July 19, 2009, Richard, Rick, his grandson Corey Harrison (Big Hoss) and Corey’s childhood friend, Austin “Chumlee” Russell have been featured in ‘Pawn Stars.’

With the show’s quick popularity, customers at the Gold and Silver Pawn increased from 70 to 700 a day.
