Diana Gabaldon is an American historical fiction writer best known for her Outlander book series.
Early life and Outlander
Born on January 11, 1952, she grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona, with her family. Her father, Tony Gabaldon was a senator of Arizona state from Flagstaff who served in the post for sixteen years. After completing her high school, she joined Northern Arizona University and earned a bachelor of science in zoology. Later on, she earned a master of science in marine biology from the University of California and a Ph.D. in behavioral ecology from Northern Arizona University.
Few years after graduating, she started working at the Center for Environmental Studies at Arizona State University as founding editor of Science Software Quarterly. While working there, she had written software reviews and technical articles for several computer publications. She had also written comic books for the Walt Disney Company during the mid-1980s.

Afterward, she began working as a professor with an expertise in scientific computation at ASU and left after 12 long years to pursue a career in writing. While watching an episode entitled The War Games of Doctor Who, the main male character of the series inspired her Outlander character, Jamie Fraser. In 1991, she released her first book of the Outlander series, as Cross Stitch in the UK and Australia which was later changed to Outlander by American publishers. Following the first book, eight books have been released till date.
She is currently writing the ninth book of the Outlander series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone which she hopes to finish writing by the end of 2018. The book series has been adapted into a TV series of the same name starring Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, whose fourth season is set to air on November 4, 2018. Apart from the Outlander series, she has also written Lord John series and several others. The seventh book of the series The Custom of the Army was edited by the writer of Game of Thrones George R. R. Martin.

The 66-year-old-writer currently lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with her husband Doug Watkins and her three children: daughters, Laura and Jenny and a son, Sam.
