Indra Nooyi began her career soon after she graduated from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. She initiated her professional journey as a product manager of the Indian branch of American multinational company Johnson & Johnson. While she was in India, she also worked as a product manager of a textile company called Mettur Beardshell.
As a student of Yale School of Management, Nooyi worked for management consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton as a part of summer internship and joined Boston Consulting Group right after she graduated from Yale. Her resume was filled with experiences of working at Motorola and Asea Brown Boveri before she joined one of the world’s largest food and beverage company PepsiCo in 1994.
When Indra first joined PepsiCo, she was recruited as a senior vice president of corporate strategy and development. Eventually, in 2001, she became the company’s CFO and was promoted to President and CEO five years later.
PepsiCo has seen some vital changes since Nooyi began directing the company. The changes have resulted in huge achievements like the formation of one of the largest fast food restaurant companies Yum! Brands and acquisition of Tropicana. She has also played a leading role in the company’s decision of merging with Quaker Oats Company, along with Gatorade.
Her untiring efforts in uplifting PepsiCo has turned fruitful as the company’s net profit has risen to $6.5 billion annually, which was less than $3 billion before she became the CFO. On the other hand, her dedication has brought her various achievements.
Wall Street Journal enlisted Indra Nooyi in its list of 50 Women to Watch in 2007 as well as in 2008. In both these years, she was also listed as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Times magazine.
Likewise, in 2008, she was ranked third in the list of Most Powerful Women by Forbes magazine. She reached the thirteenth place in the same list of Forbes in 2014. In 2009 and 2010, she even became the #1 Most Powerful Woman as ranked by Fortune magazine and was ranked second in 2015.
Indra Nooyi success story has also won her a few prestigious awards like Padma Bhushan, CNN-IBN Indian of the Year and Global Indian Award. Besides, she has earned a huge net worth amount which is valued to be $144 million. She receives yearly compensation of more than $19 million which includes her base salary, cash bonus, and pension value.
