Conservative background didn’t stop Indra Nooyi’s thirst for education

Indra Nooyi joined Madras Christian College after graduating from Holy Angeles Anglo Higher Secondary School. She graduated from the college in 1974 holding a degree in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

For her post-graduate program, she then joined Institute of Management in Calcutta. It was one of only two institutes in India at that time which provided an MBA course. Indra graduated from there in 1976.

Indra’s desire of learning was not just limited to studying at a reputed school of India; she desired more. As a result, she went on to study at Yale School of Management in New Haven, Connecticut. She joined the school in 1978 and graduated two years later with a degree in Public and Private Management.

Although Indra belonged to a conservative society, her parents always encouraged her to get educated and live an independent life. However, she did not expect her parents to be that liberal to send her to the U.S.

Breaking the stereotypes that existed in the then Indian society, Indra did not only graduate from an American university but also went on to receive several honorary degrees.

She received the first Honorary Doctorate of Laws in 2004 from Babson College. Likewise, in 2010, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Pennsylvania State University. In 2011, she received three more honorary doctorates of laws from Miami University, University of Warwick, and Wake Forest University. Four years later, the State University of New York at Purchase also awarded her an honorary doctorate of humane letters.
