Essence’s birth name is Essence Uhura Atkins. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Essence has been into acting career since her early days. Therefore, her academic life isn’t so well known to the media.
Atkins started into the television world in 1986 as Paula Young in one of the episodes of The Cosby Show. After 1986, she had a brief halt before again appearing on TV in 1989 in the same role of The Cosby Show.
Following the rough start, Essence continuously landed in various roles in single episodes of various series in the early 90s. In 1995, Atkins appeared in six regular episodes of the series Under One Roof as Charlotte “Charlie” Langston. Then again, in 1996, she did ten episodes as Julie Tate in the series Malibu Shores.
From 1997 to 1999, Essence was cast as one of the main roles of the series Smart Guy. As her best ever achievement ended in 1999, Atkins turned into the Hollywood side as well. She kicked off with the role of Nikita in the short film Nikita’s Blues.
